Blood Red Road by Moira Young

Hardback Edition
Published June 7th 2011 by Margaret K. McElderry
Borrowed From Library

My Rating: 5 out of 5 stars!

My Review: After hearing all the hype about this book and all the good things my dear friends at Goodreads were saying about Blood Red Road by Moira Young I finally picked it up at the library. I have to say it was absolutely AMAZING.

What I Didn't Like: In the beginning I was really thrown off by the writing; there are no quotation marks and the characters all talk with a Texan/Old Western accent. I also didn't really like Saba very much and the way she was so dependent on her brother but treated her sister like absolute crap. This is probably where the dislikes end...

What I Did Like: After getting used to the accents and the lack of quotation marks I finally got into the book and absolutely loved it! Saba's character seems so dependent and lame in the beginning but she turns out to be such a warrior! I loved how tough she turned out to be! "Strong, smart, an bold" as she's described at one point in the book, definitely describes her character perfectly! The rest of the characters are equally as wonderful! Especially Jack who had my heart melting and kept me laughing constantly! He strongly reminded me of Jace from TMI series.

I loved how the entire plot was sort of a compilation between The Hunger Games and True Grit. A weird sort of dystopian meets old western setting. It's a different take on dystopia where there's no sort of technology fueling the societies; they rely heavily on violence and drugs for any sort of entertainment.

And the romance is absolutely frustrating!!! Saba keeps pulling away from her heart's desire and just when you think she's going to give in, she pulls away again! Young had me screaming (at work) about how stupid and stubborn she was!!

Overall I absolutely loved this book and it's one of those stories that makes me sad to finish it. I have that feeling like "I wish I didn't read this, just so I can read it again!" LOVE!

  1. 5/5 stars? Ok, I'm totally going to pick up this book. The lack of quotation marks might bother me, but I think I can live with the Texan/Old Western accent. Plus, there's the seemingly "strong, smart, and bold" protagonist Saba and the swoon-worthy character Jack. You gave an honest review. Thanks for this recommendation!
