Musing Mondays [6]

 This week’s musing asks…
What does it take for you to give up on a book you’re reading?
Usually I can't give up on a book. Even if I don't like it, usually I just put it away and pick it up at another time. A book has to be REALLY awful for me to give up on it.

Sometimes if there's just an obscene mount of description and little dialogue, I won't be able to read all of it. I tend skim if that happens. And if that happens a lot then I find it's just not worth my time to keep reading.

Most of the time, however, books are just interesting enough to keep me wanting to know how everything will end, and then I'll just give it a lower rating.

What's your musing? Leave a link in the comment box :)

  1. Hehe I do the same thing. When there's too much description and too little dialogue, I just skip it otherwise it gets boring :)

    Here's my musing:

  2. I feel the same way, I feel obligated to finish the book.

  3. I agree as well! I tend to skim(although I scold myself when I realize I'm not reading) and I can't bear the though of not finishing a novel, even when I come back years later to read them.

  4. LOL I'm totally the same way! I try to plow through books even if I don't like them -- only if a book REALLY bothers me would I completely drop it without finishing (and that's usually only when the writing is hard to swallow or the story is just flat). x)

    We're like twins, Anna! :)

  5. I try not to do it, but I too tend to skim the paragraphs when they get to long with boring explanations or details. But better that than me falling asleep while reading it.
    Thanks for stopping by!

  6. I think I've only ever stopped reading two books, although one of them I do intend to try picking up again.
I am the same when there are block paragraphs of detail, I tend to skip over parts, although lately I've haven't found that to be a problem.
I do like to give all books I read the best chance.

  7. I have to agree with you. A book has to be really bad for me to stop reading it, and sometimes I still finish to to find out what happens! :)

  8. I can totally put a book down. It doesn't take me long to decide... and even if I force myself to finish, 9.5/10 times I am right about initial judgement.

  9. I used to have a difficult time putting books down but I've gotten better at it recently - there's just SO MUCH I want to read that I don't want to waste precious reading time! I do try to give every book 100 pages before I give up, though.

  10. ps: Also sometimes it just isn't the right TIME for me to get into a book, but if I pick it up later, it's much more enjoyable - I had that experience with The Last Samurai, by Helen DeWitt, and Perdido Street Station, by China Mieville.
