Your mother hollers that you’re going to miss the bus. She can see it coming down the street. You don’t stop and hug her and tell her you love her. You don’t thank her for being a good, kind, patient mother. Of course not—you launch yourself down the stairs and make a run for the corner.

Only, if it’s the last time you’ll ever see your mother, you sort of start to wish you’d stopped and did those things. Maybe even missed the bus.

But the bus was barreling down our street, so I ran.

Fourteen kids. One superstore. A million things that go wrong.

In Emmy Laybourne’s action-packed debut novel, six high school kids (some popular, some not), two eighth graders (one a tech genius), and six little kids trapped together in a chain superstore build a refuge for themselves inside. While outside, a series of escalating disasters, beginning with a monster hailstorm and ending with a chemical weapons spill, seems to be tearing the world—as they know it—apart.
Monument 14 is an epic story about survival among 14 teenagers trapped in what is essentially a giant Target. Somewhat reminiscent of Ashfall by Mike Mullin (yet less violent) Monument 14 examines the different roles people take in the midst of a natural disaster. I loved this story from start to finish, and I devoured it in one day. There are so many characters, but each one has his/her own personality and I found it easy to distinguish among them as well as grow to love a few. The most action is definitely in the first 50 pages, as well as the last 50 pages, but every moment contained a tense situation that had me wondering how I would react. Monument 14 is a roller coaster of emotions that will have you gripping the edge of your seat until the last page.

While Dean isn't the most admirable character, he is definitely realistic. He's flawed, yes, but he learns to deal with his insecurities and make the tough decisions that are called. He isn't your typical heroic male protagonist which I think is what made me fall so hard for him. I saw parts of myself inside of him. That person who longs for their crush from afar, lets jealousies get the better of them, and even succumbs to peer pressure. That was Dean, as well as myself, and that's what really drew me to him. His brother Alex is also an amazing character; he's brilliant to the point where he manages to save them all on more than one occasion.

The story itself is fast paced and psychologically thrilling. While there isn't much action, the pyschological aspects really drew me in. I found myself wondering, "What role would I take on in this situation? Would I be the leader? The guy doing drugs in the sports section? The mother?" It really made me wonder how I would handle the situation myself, and I think any book that makes you think like that is a winner. The different obstacles the kids have to face are insane, from crazy survivors to an infectious gas, it's all so surreal... yet so realistic. That's the most frightening thing about a book like this: It can happen in real life!

Emmy Laybourne has created an frightening situation in which teenagers must pull out all of their survival skills as well as grow up fast. Their psychological well-being is tested, and some fold under the pressure while others rise to the occasion. Monument 14 will have you flipping pages as fast as possible, because you'll need to know how it's going to end. 14 teenagers trapped in what is essentially a mall sounds like a party, but is it? Fans of post-apocalyptic, dystopian, and survival stories will love this one!

  1. I've read some mixed reviews for this, but I think I'm DEFINITELY going to give this a try after reading your review! I'm so glad that despite so many characters , you could distinguish them all! (Usually, when the characters/POV exceed 4-5, I get confused :/ ) Ooohh this definitely sounds thought-provoking! Eeeeeeeeee! I can't wait to read this :) Amazing review Annaa<3 Glad you enjoyed it so much :)

    1. That's usually a problem for me too, where I can't figure out who each character is, but I didn't have that problem with M14 at all. I was really impressed that each character had such a strong voice!

  2. Glad you liked it Annapoo! I think I just wasn't in the mood for this one when I read it. I was expecting a fast paced, terrifying story instead of a more psychological one. But I can totally see why you loved it!! Great review muffin!

  3. Awesome review!! I totally get why you liked it so much. I think that I am with Giselle that maybe I just needed to be in a different mood for it. It seemed very slow to me and I was expecting more action. I did really enjoy it though.

    1. Yeah, it really didn't have a lot of action, it was more like "What are we going to do next?" or, "How are we going to deal with power failure?" But I think I kind of liked that more because that's the kind of stuff I would think about in that situation LOL.

    1. Awh, I'm sorry to hear you didn't care for it! Do you think you'd still pick up the next one? I hear it's going to be written between Alex and Dean which I think will work really well :)

    1. It's definitely not a particularly creepy story, but it really makes you think about how you'd act in the same situation, and how different trauma affects people. It was really interesting!!

  7. Sounds like a fantastic survival story Anna! Fantastic review! This book reminds me so much of the amazing Gone Series by Michael Grant. I always enjoyed psychological mysterious books, but I'll have to read M 14 to see if I mind the lack of action.
    Have a wonderful monday!

  8. this sounds really awesome. I've been hearing mixed reviews, but the premise really does suck me in. I like books that deal with the psychological aspect of human nature. Those are often the more exciting books (for me) than the ones with all the action.

Great review. Glad you loved it, and that it was a fast read.

    1. I really love psychological books as well. They're sort of a general mind f**k which I LOVE. Have you read Mara Dyer yet? That one is so psychologically thrilling, it's amazing. You'd definitely enjoy it :)

  9. Great review! I had never heard of this book before but it sounds amazing! The idea of fighting for survival inside a chain store is kind of amusing I really want to see how they do it. Normally I stay away from the overly realistic apocalypse books(because they do feel like they could happens and it's creepy) but I think this one is going on my TBR list!

    1. It is definitely pretty creepy, but in a good one!!! I think you'd really like it if you gave it a try :) It is pretty funny, because they start out like, "Oh we need to pay them back for what we use to don't use too much stuff" and then end up like, "I WILL EAT ALL THE CANDY!!" LOL! It's pretty amusing, but at the same time you're like oh crap this would suck...

  12. So, true story: yours is the first review I've read of this book. I didn't think it was for me - honestly wasn't very interested in it. BUT. You have this WAY of talking about books that you liked, and hmm, I think maybe I might give this one a try at some point. Unrequited love, the end of the world...why not!?
